I realize there are 6 games today and it would be better to rank them after they have been played, but I'm doing it now anyway. Finals week. Game day. No time. The WAC currently is ranked 11th, right behind the MWC, and has the 7th hardest strength of schedule.
As before, only D-1 games are counted. The WAC started out plain awful, but the depth of the conference is starting to creep into the results.
1. Utah State. This is a tough call because USU does have two losses and La Tech only has 1 and Nevada looks capable, but the Aggies have a quality win over BYU.
2. Nevada. Again, a tough call, but I think this is the right place for the Pack. They played North Carolina very closely and made the WAC proud (losing by 7 thanks to a 23-7 free throw disparity). Their number 10 SOS should help them come WAC play.
3. Louisiana Tech. WHAT? I know. This would be a huge surprise, if I had not mentioned them above. At 6-1, with a road win over improving TCU, the Bulldogs have surprised everybody (probably including themselves). However, their schedule is weak so far as they have played 2 winning record teams- beating TCU and getting smashed by (a very good, under the radar) New Mexico Lobos team.
4. Idaho. I read on an Idaho fan blog that anything but a trip to the WAC tournament finals would be a disappointment. With USU and UNR in the WAC, expect to be disappointed. However, Idaho is good. Maybe even better than 4th in the WAC.
5. Boise State. Winning road games helps, especially if they can win at Illinois tonight. Do I think it will happen? No. Do I think there is a chance? Well ... no. But I am cheering for you.
6. San Jose State. They haven't played enough games to judge them, but they gave Pacific their only loss so far (they play at UNR tonight) and had a tough 17 point lead blown against Saint Mary's (at USU tonight).
7. New Mexico State. They have done nothing to deserve any sort of ranking not labeled "the bottom 10", but they are in the conference so I had to put them on here. The only thing saving them from dead last is their potential and athleticism.
8. Hawaii. They won some games. That is all that keeps them from 9.
9. Fresno State. A huge disappointment when you realize they have 2 NBA caliber players on the same team.

Neither team has the depth or the offensive firepower that the Vandals have. If Idaho can work its defensive kinks out, they'll be one of the teams to beat come conference season.
